Our 5 year anniversary is coming up at the end of the month, and with busy schedules we had procrastinated on planning a trip. Eventually we decided on the East Coast. To get focused on where, Erik surveyed his friends on Facebook about how we should spend our time. While Nick In't Hout had our favorite suggestion, we ended up focusing on what were "must see"s. We purchased flights on Monday, so it is official, we are actually going now. We don't leave for another week, but here is the itinerary right now just in case you were curious. Please post comments, if you think we are making a huge mistake, nothing is set in stone. :)
Friday: fly out of Oakland
Saturday: Walk through Washington DC- see the white house, the capital and the mall monuments
Sunday: See the Smithsonian museums- definitely the Air and Space, but we are still debating on the rest
Monday: Arlington and Mount Vernon
Tuesday: National Cathedral and the Zoo
Wednesday: In Baltimore and checking out the National Aquarium, and Fort McHenry
Thursday: In Philadelphia and touring Independence Park (with independence Hall, and the Liberty bell)
Friday: Philadelphia Museum of Art, Mutter's Medical Museum, and East Penn Penitentiary.
Saturday: Fly home
So just in case you think we are totally lame for only seeing the sights, we are working on spicing things up for the evenings. Erik is already busy planning a top 5 pub crawl of the east coast. (if this is confusing to you, you should check out his Facebook or click here) Another thing that I am nervous about, is that we are going to try to travel only using Public transportation. This is such a foreign concept growing up in CA, but having more experience with Pub. Trans. in San Fran. has made me more comfortable. We are both really excited to go and can't wait.

that'll be GREAT. I would recommend the National Museum of American history... just to see Oscar the Grouch, Seinfeld's puffy shirt, etc. There are some pretty fun exhibits, and it's right on the mall near the other Smithsonians.
If you have time, I would also highly recommend the Holocaust Museum.
Also, you'll probably see the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia (across from the Liberty Bell) which we would go to with 8th grade students. I would recommend going there, though I'm not sure how much it is... maybe it's more appropriate for younger adults? I dunno.
Either way, there are always more things you could do and see, but it looks like you've got some really great places. Enjoy your time!
Julie
Oh, and I'm glad you were entertained by Nick's suggestions. :0)
